But the symbol of Bangalore is perhaps that one majestic building housing the state legislature of Karnataka and it is none other than Vidhana Soudha. If it had not been for the imaginative power and brilliant concept of the Chief Minister of Mysore for the service period from 1951-56, Shri Kengal Hanumanthaiah and the exceptional constructional and execution power of the late chief engineer B.R. Manickam, the imposing Vidhana Soudha would have remained a dream.

Built in the year 1956, the seventeen million rupees building of Vidhana Soudha is the largest legislative building in the whole of India. Its construction required a working force of more about seven thousand laborers including construction laborers, chisellers, masons as well as wood carvers, who built it over a span of four years. A replica of Vidhana Soudha was constructed in its vicinity, housing numerous legislative offices.

The Vidhana Soudha is magnificent in its incorporation of numerous styles of architecture, which gives it a unique look. It is a brilliant amalgam of Dravidian, Indo-Saracenic and Rajasthani Jharokha styles in granite porphyry, its enormity arresting the mind of the onlooker in the very first sight. Vidhana Soudha reflects the power of the South Indian state of Karnataka and its people. The 20 meters dome with four lions in the way of the Ashokan style; the grand sandalwood entrance door and the porch with 12 forty feet high columns in granite are perfectly proportionate with the sprawling lawn spread across acres of land reflecting a soothing green. The floral motifs and designs on the granite exemplify the incredible South Indian temple art that is so renowned across the globe. The Vidhana Soudha looks absolutely spectacular when illuminated on Sundays and public holidays, making Bangalore dazzle like a perfectly cut diamond.
