The Seshadri Memorial Hall, situated in Cubbon Park at Bangalore is an old red building with pediments constructed for immortalizing the famous Dewan of Mysore, Sir Seshadri Iyer (Service period: 1883-1901). In 1913 the statue of this renowned person was erected in front of the Seshadri Memorial Hall in a pretty rose garden, since then being a familiar sight along the road down the Hudson Circle in Bangalore. This building of Seshadri Memorial Hall also houses the state central library which was opened in 1915. In 2000, this well known library based at the Seshadri Memorial Hall won the Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation Award for being the best state central library of India. It was awarded this prestige honor for its remarkable contribution for the excellent services render by the library for propagating knowledge and supporting the library movement in Bangalore, especially in Karnataka.
The building of Seshadri Memorial Hall with a 300 sq. meters which stands today is one of the earliest heritage buildings of Bangalore. In fact, the construction of this building has been greatly contributed by Kedleston's Lord Nathaniel Curzon who served the British government during its golden days of British Rule. He is the same man who decided upon building the world-famous Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata.
Sir Seshadri Iyer's service in Mysore lasted from the month of February in 1883 till the month of March in 1901, his demise being in the month of September in 1901 at the age of 56. It has been actually the largest span of time period served by any Dewan of a province. The Seshadri Memorial Hall was built to honor Sir Seshadri Iyer posthumously after Curzon to Sir Donald Robertson, the then British Resident of Mysore, about the outstanding services that were extended by Sir Seshadri Iyer.
