The Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bangalore is among the most sought after spots of tourist's attraction in the city. Kalakshetra or the domain, which is chiefly meant for promoting art and culture, has been aptly named after the first Nobel laureate of India, Rabindranath Tagore. This theatre house was inaugurated in order to commemorate the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore. This has been built specifically to promote the cultural activities in Bangalore. There is a very well equipped theatre and has the offices of the cultural academy housed there. The Ravindra Kalakshetra has undergone major renovations over the past six months and it now has been made accessible to the public and currently it wears a new look. The Ravindra Kalakshetra is 27 years old and the auditorium is now equipped with better lighting facilities and improved seating arrangements. The speakers and the other equipments required for enhancing the acoustics of the auditorium has also been updated. The auditorium is also decorated with satin curtains, while the statue of Rabindranath Tagore, which is placed in a showcase of glass, is placed at the entrance of the auditorium. It was the Union Minister for Education, Dr. Humayun Kabir who first inaugurated the auditorium on March 9, 1963.
The Ravindra Kalakshetra auditorium is usually in great demand and it is rented in two different sessions. The timing are usually 9 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 9 pm.

Different rates are charged for hosting different cultural activities, for instance for staging Kannada plays the charge is usually Rs 850 for each slot, while it charges Rs 1000 for the other Kannada competitions and cultural conferences; a sum of Rs 1500 is again charged for the cultural activities like dances, singing conferences in languages other than Kannada. But if you plan to organize a western performance of dance and song along with the orchestra, a sum of Rs 4000 will be charged in such cases. For renovating this very important cultural center there has been generous contributions not only from the government but also from eminent persons of Bangalore.
