The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan of Bangalore is recognized as an indispensable art, culture and educational center of the state. It was K.M. Munshi who conceived the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the institution was founded in 1938 with the objective of promoting and championing Indian art ideals. Since then, the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is growing as multifaceted international organization at a very high pace.
The Karnataka branch is counted as the oldest center of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan culture. Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, Sri S Nijalingappa- the chief minister, Dr. R.R. Diwakar and sri Sundararama Shetty deserve all the credits for overall development of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan as an art center in Bangalore.
The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan offers courses in vocal music, dance and even in instrumental music. Hundreds of art lovers gather at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan to participate in various cultural events like Sri M.S. Hanumatha Rao Memorial Lecture, Ra- Bha Hasanagi Endowment Programme, Bhavan Marshall MBA Convocation, Sangeet Sabha Malhar Utsav, Hindustani vocal by Smt. Jayashree Patnekar, sitar recital by Ustad Rafiq Khan, vocal by Pt. Vinayaka Torvi, Mathoor Family Endowment Programme and Hanumantha Rao Kadim Diwan Memorial Endowment.
The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is well equipped with experienced, skilled and efficient trainers and some of them have been brought from abroad to teach the Indian art students. The institution also offers discounts in fees for disabled persons, unemployed youths or pensioners. The aim is to facilitate all the art lovers irrespective of their age and sex. Even open classes are arranged for students above eight years of age. These are called introductory classes which will just introduce the sense of art or induce the interest in art among the young people of Bangalore.
