Indian Airlines was set up under the Air Corporations Act of 1953. The airline was set up with an initial capital of 32 million rupees and started its operation on the 1st of August 1953. Seven of the previously existing domestic airlines were merge din order to give form to Indian Airlines. The seven domestic airlines which were merged would include Deccan Airways, Airways India, Bharat Airways, Himalayan Aviation, Kalinga Airlines, Indian National Airways, and Air Services of India. The fleets of Indian Airlines would include Douglas DC-3 Dakotas, Vickers Vikings, Douglas DC-4s, Vickers Viscounts, Fokker F-27 Friendships, and Hawker Siddeley. The jet fleet was introduced in Indian Airlines in the year of 1964 with the Sud Aviation Caravelle which was followed by the Boeing 737-200s in the early 1970s. As of 2006, the average age of Indian Airlines fleet is 15.8 years old.
